# 18 (Service Learning Project)

1. How is writing for someone else challenging?
It's challenging because we are so used to writing for ourselves and it is very difficult to constantly be considering someone else and their particular audience, not yours.

2. How did your writing process change when writing for your client?
I feel like I was a perfectionist while doing this project. There was a lot riding on this and not only could we mess up our grade, we could mess up an opportunity to help a really great non-profit organization.

3. What did you learn about workplace writing?
I learned that work place writing is very professional and brief. It is better to leave out personal details when business writing and keep things short and to the point.

4. What would you do differently?
I would not procrastinate! My group tended to wait until the last minute to get things done and while we did produce a great product it was very stressful at times.

5. How would you explain business writing to other undergraduate students?
I would say business writing is a very good class to take and very beneficial. Even learning how to send a professional email to a teacher is something most undergraduate students don't know and someone that will be learned if you take this course.

This is my final post!! I can't believe this semester is coming to an end. I am almost a senior in college! Honestly, this was probably my favorite class this semester. I know for a fact that everything I learned in ENGL307 will be useful throughout my life. I feel like I have become more professional, and learned so much about writing for different audiences. I am not selling either of my books back for this class because I can guarantee I will want to reference them in the future!!

We met again as a a group to finish our deliverable that is due this week. I think we had a pretty solid rough draft so the changes we had to make were minimal. We changed a lot of formatting, pictures, and condensed some of our information. I think we all worked very hard on this brochure and we are hoping it will be well-received. Not only for the grade but for The Somali Bantu Association. While "working" for this organization I personally have realized what a great place it is and I really hope this brochure is an effective tool in getting more refugees and volunteers interested in SBATA.

We finally have heard back from Abdi and met with him again. He gave us very specific instructions on the brochure and how he wants it. There are a lot of programs we listed that we took straight from the website that SBATA no longer offers. We have to condense our program list. He also liked most of our pictures but had a few suggestions on adding a few more to our deliverable. We are going to meet as a group again to include the suggestions that Abdi and Becca have asked for.

Jillian and I went by SBATA to try to meet with Abdi since he has still not returned our calls or emails about what type of deliverable he wants: black or white. He also needs to give us feedback on our rough draft of the deliverable as I'm sure there are some things he wants fixed. He was not at the office but we left the brochure example with a description of what we needed from him so we are crossing our fingers that we will hear back from him soon!

We have started to brainstorm what we want to do/what our client wants for our deliverable. After getting back our graded proposal we have some insight onto what will be most effective for our brochure. We have given our client two different options. One of the options is color and over a dollar for each brochure and I believe the black and white brochure is just under twenty cents. We are anxious to get more feedback from our client so we can make more progress with our deliverable.

Our proposal is finished!! We have bound it and made two copies one for Becca and one of SBATA. We are all really proud of our work and think that it is a very strong proposal. We all worked in depth on our individual parts but obviously met several times and corresponded through email to make sure everything was going to be cohesive together.

The next step is to present our proposal to Abdi at Sbata and continue on from there. We gave him two different options on brochures so hopefully he can let us know soon which one he wants so we can start to work on our deliverable.
